Just the other day I had the privilege to be part of Michael’s class! It was an incredible experience and I would recommend parents do this. How? First of all always read over the newsletter that comes home in order to know what is going on, there could be a book reading day where you along with other parents can go to your child’s class and read a story.
I did this in Grade one…it was so cute to see the children sitting there with their favorite blanket or pillow in their favorite pajamas. Depending on the teacher they may be happy to have you come in and share a talent and make it an art class. This was what I did and it was one of the best experiences I ever had. I wanted to teach them how to make a CD case but before I did I showed them some of the scrapbooking albums I made along with flowers, bookmarks and gift boxes .Their reactions surprised me! They were really enjoying themselves as we played a guessing game about how I made this or that.
When we had finished I was really excited to see the really great CD cases they made and decorated, most of all the pride on each child’s face will be a permanent memory for me, there was real talent there! Also it was really nice to see how Michael was responding to all of it, he was very proud, that part was easy to see… he wanted to be at my side when I was sharing with the class. It was nice to see that Michael was himself at school, for some reason I had thought where it was a more structured atmosphere he would somehow be different but he wasn’t. He still slipped back into his own world at times but was always taken out gently. Instead of Michael continuing to stay by my side, his teachers got him started at doing the project so that he was part of the group, this really impressed me.
Parents, seriously get involved in your children’s class, it is so rewarding!!! I understand that some of you may be too shy or nervous to actually teach an art class but you may be able to muster up enough nerve to read a book which will only take 5 minutes or ask your teacher if you may watch a gym class! Depending on the school and teacher you may be in luck, there is always a way… you just have to find that way. Your child will love that you are part of what they are doing; Michael is still talking about it.
Awesome story - thanks for sharing.
